Our History

Development of the association

1966 — The Erna Ebeling Prize was awarded for the first time. The prize is presented annually and aims to promote research and development in medical physics and medical engineering.

1971 — The Department for Technology in Healthcare was established as a subdivision. Its members were physicians, engineers, and technicians working with medical technology in healthcare and industry.

1981 — The annual meetings of the two existing associations decided to merge into a single organisation under the current name.

1982 — The association began operating in this new form.

1989 — The MTF Travel and Scholarship Fund was established, open to all MTF members.

1994 — The first certificates for Certified Medical Master of Science Engineer and Certified Medical Engineer were issued in accordance with the association’s certification framework.

1999 — The association’s website, www.mtf.nu, was launched.

2003 — The annual meeting elected the first female chair.

2018 — The association changed its name from Swedish Society for Medical Technology and Physics to Swedish Society for Medical Engineering.
