Requirements for Medical Technology Basic Level

Overview

- Specified courses amounting to at least 30 course credits (see below)

- Qualified professional experience

Fundamental Requirements

Education in medicine and medical technology (Type 1 courses below), complemented by courses in other subjects important for medical technology practice (Type 2 courses below).
Applicants must also have worked within medical technology under the supervision of qualified medical technology professionals.

Requirements for Completed Courses

When assessing the merit value of completed individual courses, the Certification Committee uses course credits (kp).

Credits (p) from university courses under the former Swedish system are converted to course credits by multiplying by 1.5.

Higher education credits (hp) under the current ECTS system correspond 1:1 to course credits.

For education outside the university system, where credits are not assigned, the Certification Committee allocates course credits based on the assessed scope of the training.

Courses are categorised as Type 1 or Type 2 as follows:

Type 1 Courses

Courses in medicine, medical technology, and safety in healthcare, beyond completed upper‑secondary education, covering the following areas:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medical device safety / systems safety
  • Introduction to medical technology
  • Regulatory frameworks in medical technology
  • Risk management
  • Quality management systems

For certification, Type 1 courses must amount to at least 15 course credits.

Type 2 Courses

Courses covering subjects (beyond Type 1 courses) that are important for medical technology practice in healthcare, including:

  • Technical specialist courses relevant to medical technology, such as computer engineering, electronics, fluid mechanics, measurement technology, health informatics, or equivalent
  • Equipment‑specific training
  • Courses in business administration, leadership, maintenance engineering, procurement law, procurement methodology, MT management, life‑cycle cost analysis, etc.
  • Courses included in doctoral studies, such as scientific theory and methodology

Documented experience of medical technology work in a leadership role within healthcare or industry may, at the discretion of the Certification Committee, be considered as fully or partially meeting the minimum requirements within this category.

For certification, Type 2 courses must amount to at least 15 course credits.

Course Providers

Type 1 and Type 2 courses may be university‑level courses or other courses, such as MTF courses or courses provided by other associations, training institutes, authorities, or companies.
For certification, the combined scope of completed Type 1 and Type 2 courses must amount to at least 30 course credits.

Requirements for Qualified Professional Experience

Applicants must normally have at least 5 years of active, qualified medical technology work within healthcare. The work must have been carried out under qualified supervision.

For individuals working within the medical technology industry and/or research and development, part of this experience may, after assessment by the Certification Committee, be credited, provided that the work has been clinically oriented. However, at least one year must consist of qualified medical technology work within healthcare.

Diploma

Upon approved certification, a diploma is issued confirming that the individual is certified according to MTF’s Regulations for Certification at Medical Technology Basic Level.

NOTE

Certification according to Medical Technology Basic Level may, after individual assessment, be granted to:

Individuals who do not meet the requirements for the categories Medical Engineer/Bachelor’s Degree or Medical Civil Engineer/Technical Master’s Degree,
and who have completed one of the following foundational educational programmes:

  • Upper‑secondary engineering degree from the former 4‑year technical programme
  •  3‑year upper‑secondary programme in medical technology
  • Relevant IT education, e.g., systems science or informatics
  • Qualified technical training
  • Or other equivalent education

For the Medical Technology Basic Level category, the following additional requirements apply:

  • Specified courses amounting to at least 30 credits
  •  Qualified professional experience

The Certification Committee reserves the right to interpret the regulations.
Decisions made by the Certification Committee cannot be appealed.
